The Shure 57 Is A Versatile Microphone
Wonderful Sound And Versatility From The Shure 57
Microphones aren't usually cheap, and most of the time they are also highly specialized pieces of electronics. While it would be awesome to have fifty or sixty precision crafted mics lying around the studio, the reality is that you need something versatile and very robust. The Shure 57 is a very popular work horse microphone and has been considered the baseline recording device for many years.
because of the different ranges of frequencies and the necessary response, most microphones are tailored to be maximally effective within a certain band. This means that they might be best for vocals, drums, or even stringed instruments depending on the coil configuration. They may not do very well outside of their specialties, though.
A reliable workhorse like the SM57 does a very good job of most things, though it is obviously not optimized for any single application. They are the standard microphone of choice when it comes to public speaking, however. This is probably due to the extreme durability and reliability of the unit.
You might have become quite familiar with the SM57 if you frequently rent equipment for live gigs. These are industry standard units, and most rental places keep a good supply of them on hand. Well balanced, these are considered to be some of the most useful and robust of the dynamic microphones.
The SM57 delivers a nice, clean sound without allowing much of the background noise to filter through. Because of this it is usually the obvious choice for drum kit recording, at least as far as the kick and the snares go.
Having a decent microphone is one of the most important things in the recording business. Not everything is digital just yet, and acoustic sound collection is still a big deal. If you need to get a good sound from a variety of applications and would prefer to purchase a reliable, sturdy multipurpose microphone instead of a selection of specialized recording devices, the Shure 57 is probably going to suit your needs very well.

Sing hello to the iRig PRE, turns iOS devices into on-the-fly mic preamps (Engadget)
IK Multimedia's never fallen short of giving you some of the better tools for
all your on-the-go music-making utilizing your beloved iOS device as the main
rig. Now, the peripheral connoisseur's taking the wraps off its iRig PRE,
which aims to help you digitally process those glorious vocal chords by
allowing you to plug in any XLR mic into it without the need for other
adapters or cables. Furthermore, the dongle features a 3.5mm jack for audio
monitoring, gain control and can squeeze a runtime of up to 40 hours (dynamic
microphones) or 15 hours (phantom powered condenser mics) from a standard 9V
battery. The PRE amp will also come included with two of iRig's usual suspect
apps (iRig Recorder and VocaLive) to help you get started in your quest to be
the next idol. We know you can't wait to get your singing on, but you'll have
to wait until "early Q2" to do so, for a moderate price of $39.99 -- perhaps
the iRig Mic can get you through the days in the meantime.
