what is the knob on my kitchen sink for?
I've just moved to a new house, standard kitchen, a normal sink (with drainer section),
at the front of the unit is a Knob/button you can turn.
it doesn't appear to do anything at all.
nothing electric, just what appears to be a bycicle brake cable joined to a odd shaped pipe fitting (before the "U" bend" that looks like it may be some sort of internal tap/plug??
can anyone tell me what it does?
is it important?
is it broken?
there is a dishwasher but it's in another room and not attached to the same pipes.

The knob operates the is a remote control for the sink drain plug. It operates a lever mechanism in the plug hole. You can see this work if you peer down the hole when turning the knob.
To make the thing work properly you should have a flattish metal plug with a 3 cm "pin" sticking out of the middle of the underside. The plug fits over the sink drain and the pin slots into the hollow central part of the plug hole. When the knob is turned the mechanism pushes the plug up and allows the sink to drain. It's good fun to watch, for a while.
If you don't have the plug part then you can buy one from most decent ironmongers or plumbing suppliers. They're not expensive.
